Hot Rolled Steel Coil (HRPO)
Hot-Rolled steel has been rolled at high temperature from a cast steel slab more than two inches thick into steel coil as thin as 1/16 inches thick. Because the steel is rolled hot, and the reduction from slab to coil is great, the coil surfaces are noticeably rough and slightly oxidized therefore it is recommended for precision thickness.Hot rolled steel coil is more affordable than cold rolled steel because it is not processed after it is hot-rolled except for pickling when required to remove surface scale. The mechanical properties of hot rolled steel, such as yield strength, tensile strength, and elongation, vary depending on the specific grade of steel and the processing parameters used during manufacturing.
Hot rolled steel coil generally has good weldability, machinability, and formability, making it suitable for a wide range of applications. Hot rolled steel retains its inherent strength properties, making it suitable for structural applications where strength and durability are essential. It is also highly malleable and can be easily shaped and formed into various geometries without compromising its strength. While hot rolled steel typically has a scaled surface finish due to the rolling process, this rough texture can provide better adherence for coatings, paints, and other surface treatments. Additionally, the surface scale can be removed through further processing if a smoother finish is desired. If surface finish is a concern, check out our HRPO+ steel coil products for further benefits.

HRPO Benefits
There are a number of advantages to a pickled steel product compared to cold rolled steel products. First, the pickling and oiling process produces hot rolled steel that offers improved workability, including forming, bending, and stamping. HRPO steel is better for bending and deep drawing applications. Benefits for traditional HRPO steel products include:
- Better Painting
- Improved Welding
- Improved Bending, Forming, & Stamping
- Easier Laser Burning
- Avoid Blasting Costs

Slit coil is suitable for various applications across industries such as automotive, agriculture, construction, manufacturing, and more. It can be used to produce a diverse range of components, including appliances, frames, machinery attachments, and sheet metal products.
Differences Between Hot and Cold Rolled Steel
The main difference between hot and cold rolled steel is in how they are processed. Hot rolled steel is steel that has been rolled at high temperatures, while cold rolled steel is essentially hot rolled steel that is further processed in cold reduction materials. Here, the material is cooled followed by annealing and/or tempers rolling. Steels of different grades and specifications can be either hot or cold rolled. Want to learn more?
