What Is a “Steel Grade”?

 

Steel is a combination, or an alloy, of both carbon and iron. Different heating and cooling techniques can change the structure and arrangement of the iron and carbon atoms within steel. Additionally, adding other elements can change the mechanical properties of the steel, thus changing how it responds to heating or cooling treatments.

A steel grade is a designation of steel based on its composition and physical properties. There are a number of different grading systems used for steel, such as SAE, ASTM, European Standards (EN), and more. Our steel products and grades are classified by grading system so you can easily shop by the grade most relevant to you. Simply put, a steel grade is a defined chemistry based on specific manufacturing and processing.

Other organizations in other countries have specifications that use different letter and number combinations for the same or similar steel chemistries (SAE, AISI, EN, DIN, JIS, etc.).

ASTM specs are the primary specifications. Automotive, agricultural, and construction industries have their own specific requirements. Most of those requirements are based on ASTM standards, which are denoted by the American Society for Testing and Materials. We work with all of the standards, but for US manufacturers it is generally easier to start with ASTM.

How do I Select the Most Appropriate Steel Grade?

In selecting the most appropriate steel grade for your situation, it is important to consider factors such as:

  • Strength
  • Formability
  • Corrosion Resistance
  • Weight
  • Chemistry
  • Cost
  • Recommended uses

All of these factors come into play when picking the best steel for your application. Strength is measured as a force per unit area to stretching (Yield Strength) or breaking (Tensile Strength, in kilo (1000)-pounds per square inch (ksi), or Mega-Pascal (MPa)). 1 ksi = 6.9 MPa.

Formability is how much you can stretch the surface before cracks appear. This is typically measured as the % Elongation. Chesterfield is happy to personally guide you through the selection process. However, should you like to explore on your own, Commercial Steel is a good place to start. It is a low carbon steel that exhibits good strength coupled with formability. It is easy to machine and fabricate and can be securely welded. From there, you can see how improved properties – stronger, more bendable, more resistant to corrosion – will be an even better match for you.

What Causes Steel Defects?

Steel is made by a series of specific processes, beginning with melting the steel. During the molten phase, elements like sulfur are removed and other elements such as manganese, vanadium, and boron may be added. Some of the elements that tend to be removed for one particular type of steel in order to make it more formable, may be then added to another steel to make it stronger. The next step includes the addition of silicon and/or aluminum. These elements keep the oxygen from forming compounds that might melt when the steel is heated for rolling. Sometimes, compounds can remain as microscopic particles, called “inclusions.” Our current steel making practices have reduced the size and frequency of these inclusions.

The liquid, molten steel is next cast to cool and freeze it. Immediately following this it is either rolled while still hot, or completely cooled, and reheated and rolled at a later time. Surface defects that can appear during casting and rolling that could lead to surface cracking are removed. However, the internal inclusions and surface cracks can cause defects when you form the steel to make a final product.
